Ballet Class

Ballet is the foundation for all forms of dance. It is essential to the development of poise, grace, balance and discipline required to become an excellent dancer. Students build foundation through barre exercises, centre work, waltz rhythms, across the floor allegros, and centre adagio combinations. Ballet classes at RAFA INTERNATIONAL DANCE SCHOOL School focus on increasing strength while allowing students to develop balance, poise, classical lines, and artistic expression. Students must wear leotard and tights and have pink ballet shoes. Hair must be worn away from the face.

*Exams will be held around March Each year
Jazz and Contemporary Dance

Great for the student who wants to explore movement but is not drawn to the ballet mould. These classes teach freedom of expression, co-ordination, strength, flexibility and are a good grounding for any other kind of dance you may take up later. It consists of slower movements that strengthens the body and improves balance. Jazz dance can take many different paths.

It is often competed in large groups in its more traditional form, but can also cross over into other styles of dance to be lyrical, contemporary, or hip-hop. Jazz and Contemporary classes at RAFA INTERNATIONAL DANCE SCHOOL School incorporate the techniques of many great jazz masters and choreographers. Our classes are a wonderful combination of traditional, contemporary, and unique jazz forms and styles.

Capoeira by Senzala

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music, and is sometimes referred to as a game. It was developed in Brazil mainly by African descendants (N'golo, or zebra dance – a kind of dance in which the participant uses their feet to kick the head of their opponent similar to how a zebra moves, hence the name) with native Brazilian influences (Maraná war fight – a kind of fight in which one uses all of his or her body to attack the enemy), probably beginning in the 16th century.

It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques; at heart is the ginga (similar to native Brazilian dance until today), the back-and-forth, foot-to-foot movement that serves as the starting point for such leverage. Capoeira used in genuine self-defense situations incorporates many sweeps and low moves, whereas when played as a game there is more emphasis on high moves, demonstrations of acrobatics, full cartwheels (called au) for evasion, and flips or other exotic techniques by mestres(masters), and performing an entertaining match for the audience.
